Week 23. Souvenirs in Evpatoria

14:57 Posted by Unknown 6 comments
Week 23
Date - 9th of March - 16th of March
Topic - Travelling. Souvenirs. Writing postcards.

I always thought the native city of Evpatoria - spent my childhood there, but due to recent events I almost nothing to do with it. But nevertheless there are wonderful sea and beautiful beaches. Souvenirs there usually sell very many, but they all generally refer to the trash. But people are used to buy, so they are in great demand.

I can't say that it's bad, because that's the way the locals earn their living. Often people with disabilities among them, they create a lot of souvenirs with their hands and then sell, or sell for sale. The most common is of course the sink brine, dried crab, a variety of beads and all sorts of ridiculous t-shirts. In General, most of the Souvenirs in Kiev, for example, would never have bought it, but that's the point...

Although I agree that the tradition of buying gifts is meaningless tradition. As to drag all this stuff close friends who then vicinity can't, and suffer with them.

Week 22. My trip in Italy

Week - 22
Date - 2nd - 9th of March
Topic - Sightseeing. Report from the trip.

In July 2012 I with my sister and Vika Antonovich traveled to Italy. We flew on the aircraft company Alitalia and landed in Rome. There was a stopover on a plane to Florence.

We stayed in a beautiful, completely accessible to people with disabilities, the hotel Casa Vacansa I Girasoli, which was located 100 km from Florence. The hotel is very clean and comfortable, lots of delicious Italian food, a warm pool and a beautiful view. We lived there for 9 days.

Every day was very informative excursions - we went to the Florence, Pisa, Lucignano, Cortona, Pienza and one of the best circuit in the world Mugello Circuit. The peculiarity of all trips was of course the food, we are constantly eating, both at the pump and in the prestigious private restaurants and private clubs.

To describe the whole trip is simply impossible, Italy has very many beautiful monuments and rich history. The organisers tried to make us such a rich program, while not overloading us. Before lunch we sunbathed and swam in the pool, and after dinner went for a tour.

That was a wonderful 9 days of my life! The first time I was abroad for the first time so far from home was being in a wheelchair. This trip marked the beginning of my independent life and travel in a wheelchair.

Week 19. Abraham Lincoln

13:27 Posted by Unknown No comments
Week - 19
Date - 9th - 16th of February
Topic - Presidents Day. Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln was one of the most famous presidents of the USA. He was born in the family of a poor farmer in 1809 in Kentucky, but soon his family left for the wild forestland of Indiana. He was taught reading, writing and simple arithmetic, as his family could not afford better education.

When he was 18, he went to New Orleans and there he saw a slave market. It made a deep impression on him and he began to hate slavery and he decided to fight against it. In 1830 he went to Springfield and became a clerk in a store. He learned much and greatly improved his knowledge.

He entered politics and in 1832 became a candidate for the Parliament of the State. Soon he became a force in political life and in 1860 was elected President of the USA. He was an enemy of slavery. Some of the Southern States left the Union, and the war between the South and the North began. At first the war went badly for the North but Lincoln never lost his courage and soon they won.

When the war was over, Lincoln issued a proclamation to say that slavery was abolished. Lincoln was well known all over America and everybody loved him. In 1864 he was elected President of the USA for the second time. But his enemies could not let him continue his work. He was shot in a theatre in Washington on April 14, 1865 and died the next day.

Week 16. My learning process

12:23 Posted by Unknown 2 comments
Week 16
Date- 19th-25th of January
Topic: Business Cost. Money

On these week the task wasn't too difficult, but sweat still had. I have one problem - on distansenglish audio doesn't work (http://goo.gl/QAlS3f). I had no problems with jobs, but it is a little difficult to answer questions. It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of bill gates and his wife charity they donated large sums of money and didn't stop there. I heard that in the year they donate about $ 8 billion.

The topic of the online meeting on Monday was money and business. I'm remembered how to talk big numbers, because I didn't say it at school. And of course Martin Luther King - a very strong personality. I learned a lot of new...

I haven't been on face-to-face meeting because of the snow, it fell a lot. We were not able to travel by car from the village. And on Saturday I haven't been, because I hoped for a lesson on Friday. I will definitely look record.

I write words in my vocabulary in LinguaLeo. After that I repeat them. Very effective) Who use this service? Add me in your pride)

This is not my picture. Just fun :)

Ed Roberts Campus | An International Center for People with Disabilities

15:10 Posted by Unknown 3 comments

For those who are unfamiliar with Ed Roberts, he is considered the father of the disability rights movement. He helped make rights for people with disabilities a civil rights issue. Leading to laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). All while living most of his life with severe polio and having to use an iron lung. Yet still fell in love, married, and fathered a son. Without him and those like him, my job at a Center for Independent Living may not even exist. For more on his amazing life, read this brief bio.

This past April, the Ed Roberts Campus was opened in Berkley, CA in his honor. In case you didn’t read the bio (which you should), Ed Roberts was the first severely disabled student to attend the University of California Berkeley. The organizers of the campus stated that they want the campus to be a place that is dedicated to fostering collaboration and improving the services and opportunities for people with disabilities locally and worldwide.

Now let’s look at some of the design aspects of the building. First, the building is connected to the BART mass transit system. making it accessible to more of the population. After entering the building you’ll notice is the “floating” spiral staircase. Partially suspended and with natural light coming from up above, it appears light and delicate. You may wonder why such a long ramp is being used. Well there are plenty of elevators in the building, but in case of emergency, the ramp also serves as a quick exit that can handle many people.

The elevators have something very neat that I’ve never come across before that you can see in the picture above. Near the floor is a big call button that can be used by wheelchair users. They just use their footrests to bump into and push he button. There are many more accessible features to the building that can be found in the design section of the Ed Roberts Campus website at http://edrobertscampus.org/design.php . Below is a video that highlights the campus.
